Project Name: St Andrews School, Yetminster
Type of Project: Macadam Sports Court Surface
St Andrews School in Yetminster needed to update their aged concrete multi-use games area. Alumasc Surfacing Systems provided them with a modern and versatile macadam sports court surface for their students to play.
Alumasc Surfacing Systems completed a site survey at the school and recommended that a macadam surfaced court should replace the existing concrete court. Macadam courts are commonly found at Schools and sports clubs due to their versatile flooring type. Sports such as netball, tennis and basketball can all be played on the court.
The concrete court at St Andrews School needed to be removed to allow for the new macadam surface, Alumasc Surfacing Systems performed all excavation works. A base of free draining stone was installed to the sub base to allow for sufficient drainage, above the base a layer of macadam was installed, at a typical thickness of 25mm. A 13mm shock pad was laid on top of the macadam, the shock pad acts as a cushioning substrate and has a spongy but firm feel which makes it perfect for use as an outdoor safety surface. A final layer of anti-slip paint was installed above the shock pad, not only is the paint aesthetically pleasing, but also provides skid resistance which is in line with current legislation.
Vigorous anti-slip tests were carried out to determine the most suitable macadam surface for the multi-use games area. The coatings are environmentally friendly and are resistant to fungi and algae growth, making the court low maintenance.
Macadam is an all-weather surface that’s strong enough to withstand heavy use on a regular basis, this makes macadam surfaces ideal for schools that require long lasting and durable outdoor space.
