Project Name: Burton Road Primary School
Size of Project: 450m2
Alumasc Surfacing Systems provided Burton Road School with a brand-new sports surface for their pupils to use in all weathers. As well as providing a versatile sports court, Alumasc Roofing Systems also supplied a new waterproofing system to repair the existing leaking roof below the new sports pitch.
Before the sports surface could be installed staff at Burton Road School and Alumasc needed to pay attention to the leaking roof. The Caltech QC (Quick Cure) liquid waterproofing system was specified by Alumasc after the site survey had been carried out. It was of high priority to make the roof watertight again – the Caltech QC system was the ideal solution for the project due to its quick curing nature and full compatibility with the proposed sports surface.
The existing asphalt waterproofing had begun to break down and damage to the upstands was clearly visible and a likely cause of the internal water ingress. Prior to works commencing, repairs to the asphalt were required to give a suitable substrate to apply the Caltech QC waterproofing system.
The existing sports surface, which was glued to the asphalt roof, needed to be removed so that the Caltech QC waterproofing could be applied to the asphalt roof. The surfacing system was also required to fill in the existing gutters to remove the risk of injury to pupils but maintain use of the existing chute outlets.
Once the waterproofing element of the project was complete Alumasc Surfacing Systems could focus their attention on installing the sports surface. A levelling layer of wet pour rubber was installed above the waterproofing element to allow for efficient drainage. This layer also acts as a shock pad to offer fall cushioning, the shock pad has a spongy, but firm feel which makes it perfect for use as an outdoor safety surface. The shock pad meets current recreational tolerance levels – artificial sports surfaces need to provide a minimum level of shock absorption. This protection was not present in the original system.
The 450m² sports surface sits above the shock pad. The surface is ideal for use in schools, leisure centres and sports clubs where several sports are played, such as, football, netball and hockey. The surface is fully porous and can adapt to suit summer and winter weather conditions.
